Which Wine Course is Right for Me?

Which Wine Course is Right for Me?

Are you looking to expand your knowledge of wine but unsure which course is the best fit for you? Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned enthusiast, finding the right wine course can make a significant difference in your learning experience. Let's explore the options to help you decide between a WSET course or an informal wine course.

What is WSET?

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) is a globally recognized organization that offers structured wine education programs. These courses are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of wine production, regions, tasting techniques, and food pairings. WSET courses are ideal for individuals looking to pursue a career in the wine industry or deepen their knowledge in a structured environment. The courses provide a gradual learning method from Levels 1 through 4.

Is WSET Right for Me?

If you are serious about wine and want a formal education with industry-recognized qualifications, a WSET course may be the perfect choice for you. WSET courses are structured, with clear learning objectives and assessments, making them ideal for those who thrive in a more traditional educational setting.

Flexible WSET options

We know not everyone has the time to commit to attending in-class courses, or maybe you live somewhere too far to travel to an in-class course. Because of this, Wine Plus+ offers flexible options. All of them achieve the same, recognized WSET qualifications, they are just delivered in different formats.

Online courses are offered for Level 1 and Level 2. These can be completed for WSET Wine or Spirits certification. All the study and materials can be done online and you can even sit the exam remotely from wherever you are. The only drawback is you miss out on the classroom experience and any tastings you do are at your own expense.

Hybrid courses are our new, flexible offering that has the best of both worlds. You complete the theory part of the course by viewing online lectures at your own pace and then come in to the classroom for a tasting workshop. We offer hybrid versions of WSET Level 2  & Level 3 Award in Wines.

In-class courses are the traditional way to teach about wine. While less flexible in terms of your time, you get the opportunity to taste and learn with an instructor in-person and to taste and learn with colleagues.

Which WSET Level should I take?

New to wine with little or no experience, or just want to cement a really good foundation of wine knowledge, tasting and food and wine pairing? Start with Level 1.

With a little bit of knowledge or experience in the industry, you can jump straight into Level 2. Level 1 is not a prerequisite.

Done Level 2 and want to take that next step for a much deeper understanding of the world of wine, winemaking and grapegrowing? Then it sounds like you are ready for WSET Level 3.

What are Informal Wine Courses?

Informal wine courses are often offered by local wine shops, community colleges, or online platforms. These courses are more flexible and casual compared to WSET programs, focusing on practical knowledge, tasting experiences, and fun interactions with fellow wine enthusiasts. Informal courses are great for individuals looking to explore wine in a relaxed and social setting without any exams or certification. We offer Wine Workshops with specific, fun, one evening topics and tastings.

Is an Informal Course Right for Me?

If you are looking to enjoy wine learning in a more laid-back environment, connect with like-minded individuals, and explore various wines without the pressure of exams, an informal wine course may be the perfect fit for you. These courses are often more affordable and offer a more social and interactive approach to wine education.

Which Course Should You Choose?

The decision between a WSET course and an informal wine course ultimately depends on your goals, learning style, and budget. If you are seeking a structured, in-depth education with industry recognition, a WSET course is the way to go. Then choose the option that best suits your schedule and learning style. On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed and social approach to wine learning, an informal course may better suit your needs.

Whichever course you choose, remember that the world of wine is vast and diverse, offering endless opportunities for exploration and enjoyment. Whether you opt for a WSET program or an informal course, the most important thing is to have fun, expand your palate, and deepen your appreciation for the wonderful world of wine.
